FBI Special Agent Reed Ryan is faced with the most frustrating case of his career. Penny Dietrich's body was found in the desert just outside Scottsdale, Arizona. The unusual part was the staging of the scene and condition of the body. Penny was brutally raped and mutilated. Her killer then carefully posed and wrapped her body in a fine cotton blanket and set it ablaze. The trail quickly goes cold when Ryan finds that Penny doesn't seem to exist before her twentieth birthday.
A year later, Ryan is called to the scene of a double homicide where he finds two more bodies, a twenty-five-year-old woman and an eighteen-year-old boy, killed in the same ritualistic manner.
