Excerpt from The Scottish Geographical Magazine, 1896, Vol. 12: Published by the Royal Scottish Geographical Society
SO that While Barka has drawn students Of antiquity by its well known ancient sites, and Murzuk and the surrounding part of Fezzan find a place and description in the pages of our travellers, because it was the first town from Tripoli, we fail to discover much Of interest about that range of hill-country lying inland from the coast, between Nalut on the west and Lebda on the east, at a distance varying from 50 to 100 miles.
I hope to Show in the following notes that these hills, through which I made a brief journey in March last, are full Of interest, and well deserve notice at the hands of both geographers and archaeologists. Certain parts of them are rich in evidences of a hitherto uninvestigated civilisation, and the varied physical features Of the tract itself put it before the monotonous and inhospitable desert which lies beyond it.
