Francis Hamlin is about to make a fateful decision. His life has been rocked by the loss of his long-time girlfriend, who left suddenly and unexpectedly. All his plans now seem pointless-and that puts him in a position where he's ready to consider doing something unusual and unexpected. But what he doesn't realize is that his choice is also going to put him in dire peril.
He accepts an invitation to work at a research station in the most remote and inaccessible place in the world, Vostok Station, Antarctica. It is supposed to give him an opportunity to participate in discovering something truly unique with far reaching implications to positively impact the entire outside world. It also takes him far away from the pain of his loss.
But what they do discover there is something truly horrible. When people begin to die, the harsh truth about the reality of their situation sets in-they are trapped with no way to escape. All flights are impossible during the brutal winter. They cannot leave.
As the already small group begins to dwindle, Hamlin discovers much about himself and his fellow crew members, and begins the healing process after the loss of his life partner. But all is for naught if they cannot figure out a way to endure this long, dark winter where death seems to be lurking around every corner.
