Thanks to what has come to be known as 'The Iron Curtain of Discreet Silence', at the termination of the Second World War, there was a seemingly unanimous acceptance of the then novel legal proposition that an accuser is a fit person to act as judge of his own charges. by the author of the present book, Mr. F. J. P. Veale. Enlarged versions of both books were subsequently published in the United States, Mr. Montgomery Belgion's book under the title
Victor's Justice
in 1949 and Mr. Veale's book under its original title in 1953. That these books, and others too numerous to mention, published both here and abroad, have contributed to a gradual change in public opinion is suggested by the fact that before the end of June 1957, the last of the German prisoners serving sentence by a British Court as war criminals had been released.
