In 1939 like many other families in the Britain, the Jacksons in London had to decide whether to evacuate their children to safer areas. It was expected that German saturation bombing would devastate cities immediately war was declared. Ron and May decide their two eldest children, Kitty (10 yrs.) and Tim (5 yrs.) would be evacuated while Frank (3 mos.) and May would stay in London with Ron, a lorry driver for NAAFI, so is in a Reserved Occupation. May agrees mainly because she has a Premonition that 'something terrible' would happen to them if they stayed. Ron becomes a Warden. Kitty is very happy with the foster parents she has in both Folkestone and Wales, but Tim is not in Wales. May becomes very jealous of Kitty's close relationship with the Davies's in Wales and after a letter from them about Kitty's possibly future she determines to bring Kitty home to London immediately. Bur an upsurge in the London bombing stops her - temporarily. but using an excuse brings her back to London in March 1942, then Tim in the September, ignoring her Premonition. For many reasons Kitty is extremely resentful, Tim is very glad. Four months later the school they are attending is bombed at lunchtime and both children are severely injured. Kitty blames May totally for he now having lost both legs. Ron and Kitty's first foster mother (Miss Anne Carruthers) have become lovers and had formulated plans that would have taken Ron and Kitty to Folkestone but these were abandoned when the school was bombed and May needed Ron.
