The unveiling of the sculpture by Maggi Hambling caused controversy with some viewers attempting to cover it up and others praising the originality of the artwork. Kaethe Fine's play Woltstonecraft Live! was performed to celebrate the regeneration project of Newington Green and to raise awareness of the campaign for a statue honoring the 18th century radical. The play depicts the shooting of a film about the relationship between Mary Wollstonecraft and the writer William Godwin. Their daughter, Mary, would become an author and write the classic, Frankenstein.
