United Worlds Authority
is a unique blend of international and intergalactic intrigue, rare in Science Fiction. It is a story of friendships that span time and space, of conflicts on Earth and above, how a poor world goes from rags to riches and how a young female pilot, and ensign, becomes empress of her planet.
This rise to prominence begins when the Russian Federation realizes that celestial visitors are hiding deep beneath the South Pacific Ocean. Russia intends to keep this knowledge a secret and use it for their benefit. The Russians are unaware that the United States has learned of this discovery through an intelligence operation. These nations should be cooperating but instead are competing. Each wants the significant international prestige when they, and they alone, announce to the World that humanity has galactic visitors. Unknown to the Americans they too have been infiltrated, but not by an Earthly organization. The United Worlds Authority, UWA, has one of their "observers" within the US President's Camp David top-secret operation. This galactic union, over a hundred member worlds, has an announcement of their own to make to the nations of the globe. A longtime adversary of the UWA is heading directly toward Earth to exterminate all life and strip it bare of its vast natural resources. Earth is about to become the focal point of a galactic battle between two massive opposing forces. UWA simply refers to its adversary as the "Enemy." The UWA, also known as the Authority, has been fighting the "Enemy" ceaselessly for almost a hundred years. The Authority cannot permit Earth's resources to be taken by their foe and used against them. Humanity is given an ultimatum: cooperate with the UWA. If mankind refuses, Earth will be converted into a diminutive star. Humanity faces either extermination by the Enemy or by the UWA. Earth is helpless to resist and chooses to yield to the demand of the lesser of two evils, the Authority. During the battle for Earth on individual makes the difference between victory and defeat, Angelica Dimere Bakaru. Angie, as she is affectionately known by her many friends, is an elite fighter pilot, the first niece of her world's kind emperor, and its eventual Empress. Her boldness, decisive action and unrestrained bravery saves not only the UWA fleet from annihilation, but Earth as well.
Yet she is not the only hero.
The president of the United States, Dominic Grande, and his secret staff, manipulates the President of the Russian Federation into cooperating with the rest of the world to defend it. The political international and intergalactic chess game has two winners, Angelica's planet, Earth, and this time, not the Authority or the Enemy.
For almost thirty-five years the author, Stephen L. Baker, worked for the US Department of the Air Force in missile and aircraft development. He retired from the Special Operations Office at Wright-Paterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio. Much of the intrigue and integration between the novel's characters reflects his long experience within the government.
